Red Sox designate former Middleborough High star for assignment

Sean Newcomb has been living every Massachusetts-born ballplayer s dream over the past two months but his time with the Red Sox may be winding down The former Middleborough High standout was designated for assignment by the Red Sox following the first challenge of Saturday s doubleheader To fill his spot on the roster the Red Sox called up right-hander Luis Guerrero from Triple-A The left-hander will now be made available to other teams though he could still remain with the organization and be outrighted to Triple-A if he clears waivers Given his performance in Boston it seems likely another big league club will be interested in his services After making the Opening Day roster as a non-roster invitee in spring training Newcomb posted a ERA in innings split between the starting rotation and bullpen Newcomb has lately served as the club s long-relief man and has filled selected fundamental innings for the club but after pitching the first event of Saturday s doubleheader the crew needed fresh arms and opted to make a move Guerrero has yet to allow an earned run in MLB appearances dating back to last September including three outings this season In appearances for Triple-A Worcester this season Guerrero has posted a ERA with strikeouts in innings
